Power wash outdoor furniture

Hey guys one of my window cleaning customers wants her outdoor furniture power washed. Should I do a low pressure rinse or should I downstream or apply some some laundry detergent to the cushions then rinse.

I was thinking of putting a cap full on tide in a fiver and then downstream scrub if necessary then rinse.

Who has a sales rep?

For those of you who currently are or who strive to be more than a one-man operation, who here has a full-time sales rep? As a former FISH Operations Manager, I can attest that this is how they grow their business so quickly after opening a franchise location. The sales rep hits the streets full-time and the owner also spends a fair amount of time cold calling. How many of you are already doing this?

Residential Price per Pane

I know many of you simply look at a house and estimate how long it will take to clean and boom, there's the price you're going to charge. I'm posing this thread toward those of you who take a more "scientific" approach by actually counting the windows. I know there are different factors that could cause your pricing to vary like if there's a 7 foot tall bush immediately in front of the windows. Let's pretend you're in the run-of-the mill cookie cutter subdivision full of newer homes that can be found anywhere in America. On average, what do you charge for in/out pricing per pane of glass (so 2 panes of glass per double hung window just to be clear). I'm not talking storm windows or anything difficult. It's been 5 years since I last worked for a window cleaning company, and I think we charged $4 per pane for in/out which seemed low even at the time.

Former FISH Operations Manager

Good morning everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. I'll do my best to keep my intro brief and to the point. I'm from Western New York (Buffalo Bills country) originally and was employed by FISH as an Operations Manager from 2006-2009. Since leaving them, I moved to Texas after finishing college and getting commissioned in the Army. I now live near Fort Hood, TX and have 14 months until I leave the military due to family considerations. I love Texas and have no intention to return to the snowy northeast. I don't know where I'll end up but it will likely be somewhere along I-35 between Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth. The plan is to take my knowledge I learned from the FISH System (it's not really a system, more like common sense Business 101 stuff) and either start from scratch or purchase an existing business if the money and timing are right. Until February 2016 when I get out of the Army, I'll continue to learn from your posts and would love to contribute to the conversations if you have any FISH related questions.

Is this a good price?

HI

Got an Ins quote from JD Walters of 1725.00.

This is covering a sole prop, no employees, residential window cleaning, no powerwash.

I am new to all of this, and have no idea as to whether this is a good policy for a beginner.

Feels a bit pricey, but then again.......

If you need more info I could try uploading a copy for you to see.

Residential Trick: Side poling

I was in a big house the other day with HUGE picture windows. We're talking like 8'x8' sized windows. I wasn't worried about drips since the floor was all tile but since I'm always trying different things I side poled them.

I've been window cleaning for a while and never actually tried this: If you go fairly slow, the water will roll off your squeegee so you don't drip. Usually, I'm geared for speed, but in this case going slow saved me a lot of clean up. Side poled to where I could hand clean it, followed it with a mop and captured most of the water.

I'm sure a lot of you probably already knew this, but thought I'd put it out there for the new guys or the old guys who've never tried for slowness.

New Ettore water fed pole and dual DI cart

I just recently purchased my first water fed pole and DI cart. Got the pole already and the cart will be here tomorrow. Just wondering what type of brush you guys would recommend? It came with a brush of course and I have the pencil jets and the fan jets so that I can use either one that I need. I will mainly use it on residential work, mostly dbl hung windows. Thanks for the help guys.

Customer says we scratched her glass!

I've been cleaning glass commercially and for residential customers for almost 10 years and I have never had a customer accuse me of scratching their glass. This particular residential job was just an ordinary clean and certainly not anywhere close to being a construction clean up job. In fact the husband told me that he has not been able to get in touch with the previous cleaner and so he decided to look elsewhere and he found me. Anyway the wife calls me yesterday asking about her windows being scratched all over. I told her that I did not use anything at all that would scratch her glass (no razors, and there was no film on the windows and no specialty glass, just reg glass). I also told her that her husband and I talked about the scratches that were already in the glass and he said that it happened when the house was built. She thinks otherwise. Long story short she said to come back or she will cancel the check. I even gave them a discount from what I quoted over the phone because the job wasn't that big. Just wondering what you guys would suggest ?

Looking for Advice with this wrap

We just bought a 1994 GMC Sonoma. Has 160,000 miles. It was from Tennessee, and literally has no rust. We normally would have bought a newer truck but we got it checked out, literally not a thing wrong with it and we got it for $1,700 out the door including tax, title, and plate. 4.3 V6 engine.

Okay, we are getting a wrap on it and we have our first proof. Very similar to our other trucks. But I want to see if you have any thoughts to make it better. s10wrap_zps65e1c732.jpg

Flier Fliers - what can happen with a bit of luck

Just wanted to share a positive experience I've had with with fliers. The point is not to work out ROI, or own $ labor spent delivering, etc. I've trudged my fair share of miles for days and got zero. It's about what can happen, and leveraging it to the max, hopefully.

One Sunday morning I had a spare hour while my daughter was at basketball training. I was in an area I don't normally service, but I decided to do a walk around. Dropped about 200 fliers, mix of high end apartments and businesses.

Two weeks later get a call from a Real Estate agent from that area. He wanted his and an apartment he was selling cleaned. Small places, so easy as 2 x $150.

Then he passes my number on to his neighbour. Another $150. But even better, while cleaning the outside with wfp, a passerby asks for my card - 'Ive just bought a home near here, 2 storey, can you do that after I move in?' Sure no probs, call when you're ready I say.

6 months later, she calls, ready for a quote. $750 - 'sure, come next week, then every 3 months; oh and would you be interested in cleaning our restaurant and motel?'

Quoted it around $1500 - 'great, when can you do it'

Result so far from 1 hr walk - $2700.

Yeah, a bit lucky I suppose, but it wouldn't have happened if I'd sat in the car reading the newspaper, like I planned to do. So I now make sure I have fliers in both cars, and drop 50 - 100 at a time if convenient. And it was nothing special, just a basic A5 glossy info flier with no call to action, with a few color pics. So, hopefully this gives some of you who are unsure of fliers a bit of motivation. I don't slam out thousands of fliers a month, but I always have some on hand.

Is there any room for charity for us window cleaners?

to be more particular im talking about giving discounts or doing charity cleanings? anyone do that?

today i went on a repeat resi window clean of this 80yr old german lady (1800 sq feet 4bd/ 2bath). she is widowed, she is not rich but i would assume middle class, her local church people come over every november to help her setup her christmas decorations/tree in her home, another church guy comes and power washes her small deck for free. Her neighbor comes over atleast once a week to drop off food.

on my drive to her home this morning i was thinking about knocking the price down from 280 to 200 as a goodwill gesture and to show her that i do have charity in my heart for the elderly.

as im cleaning and talking to her at the same time, she tells me about her two children, her 50yr old son is well-off living in another state working as a medical director of a hospital. she paid off the mortgage of her daughters home and is helping to pay for the two grandkids private schools.

she also tells me that her home that cost her $120k in 1970 is now valued at 1.5mill and when she passes away they will sell it and give the money to her grandkids.

all thoughts of discounting my service have vanished and i charge her full price.

is that bad?

Jammed Wash-iT Pro DI housing

Anybody got any tips on how to remove a jammed Wash-iT Pro DI housing? I almost broke the black plastic wrench trying to get it off, and it won't budge. And before all you wise guys jump all over me, yes, I am turning the wrench in the correct direction. :D The housing has a normal right hand thread, so it comes off in the normal fashion. You have to turn in the opposite direction to the marking on the wrench because on the Wash-iT Pro the DI housing is installed upside down.

As far as I recall, I did use the magic lube on the threads when I assembled it after the last resin change. I have tried tapping the wrench with a piece of wood, and with a rubber mallet - nothing. I tried putting a piece of pipe over the wrench handle, and the handle just started to bend. I've tried gently tapping the housing around the thread area with a rubber mallet to try to shake it loose - nothing. I'm out of ideas. I haven't tried a heat gun on the threads yet.

Anyone out there had a similar problem, or have any constructive ideas?

Thanks guys.

Response to Reach-It pole diameter video

This post is in response to this video:

So the Reach-it Mini and Pro have a diameter of 43mm not including pole skin, giving them a massive diameter. Its not on their website so I cannot verify that.

Unger nLites = 35mm

Gardiner xtreme 22 = 34mm

Gardiner xtreme 35 = 40mm

Gardiner Super Max 45 = 43mm

Gardiner SLX 25 = 34mm

Gardiner CLX 27 = 37mm

Logic will tell you the point where the hand is strongest and where something is comfortable are not the same. We all know we will squeeze a 2" pole with more force than a #2 pencil. But as the 3 flex comparison videos show, the Unger's 35mm is more comfortable to hold than both Reach-its. We're holding poles for long periods of time, not squeezing them until they shatter. So really, all of the above Gardiner poles and Unger will be more Comfortable to hold than the Reach-its, just common sense. Also, the Gardiners are lighter as was mentioned in the first video, so even more ergonomic.

The ironic thing is, the Reach-it Medic campaign could be used by other pole companies to show why they are more ergonomic than Reach-it, not the other way around, found that bit funny.

Over-estimating your work?

Just curious as to what you do when you completely over estimate a job? I bid a residential CCU at $950-$1000 and it's probably fair to say I probably over-estimated it by $300 when it's all said and done. She didn't even think twice about the price and asked me to schedule her for 2 cleanings a year.

1. Do I take the money and run and go buy something I really want?

2. Drop my price a little because I feel slightly guilty.
