Gutter Vac??

So I was doing some concrete work with my father in law...it's how we bond and how I pay for my plane ticket out to Hawaii...and we were using a rigid shop vac to clean up a bunch of slurry. This thing picked up just about everything wet leaves, twigs, sand, chunks of concrete and a ton of water.

So it got me thinking about this gutter vac idea. It seems there is a lot skepticism about these things. The price of entry is too much for me for something I haven't seen proven. Even here on wcr the vac is over $1k. Does anyone have some experience using just a regular shop vac. Could you diy it and still get good results?

It wasn't a cheapo vacuum itself but I think with a brand new vac and some abs pipe you could have a decent vac for less then $500. Any thoughts or input? Or should I just stick to the blower?
