Help why am i still getting spots at the top from wfp

So, I've watched a hundred videos and read all the posts I could find. When I do a window, I start with the frames and get the top real good. Then I let it drip for half a minute. Then I come back and do the window and rinse, starting within an inch of the top frame. I'm not getting a ton of spots but its enough to notice and they're all at the top. What am I doing wrong?

Educating Customers WFP

WFP is so new, the general public don't understand it, and so customers need to be educated so it doesn't look "like I'm taking a hose to the windows" or "just rinsing them off." Showing a positive end result is not good enough. I am handing out a document explaining why we use WFP, how it works and the benefits that are passed onto the customer.

What do you do to educate customers so they don't think there getting ripped off ?

S#!t Happens

Pun intended...... After a dinner of lintel soup and shredded wheat breakfast I was doing a job and asked the client which restroom I could use. Well , one of the best bowel movements I've had in my life!!! After a few squirts if air fresh, opening a window ( would have lit a match if I had one ) and closing the door behind me all I could do was pray she didn't enter the bathroom. A half hour later I was cleaning the windows in the adjoining bedroom and there it was... She had opened the door and all I could do was sniff the air and put my head down in shame.........

At the end of the day she was impressed with the work and asked me to put them down for a fall cleaning...

So embarrassing....

Hope you all are laughing!!!!

Indoor Window Cleaning pads

I used the Unger Window Cleaning and Polishing pads to do a skylight from inside last week, and was relatively pleased with the result. I'm wondering if anyone else uses them on indoor residential jobs. If so, when do you use them and what have been the results. Are there any tips for making them more effective?

I sprayed some pure water from my WFP on the cleaning pad and used it first, having put it on the end of my Unger extension pole. The pad was black when I finished covering the skylight. I came back a few minutes later and it looked like there were smears all over the skylight. In fairness though, I don't know when the last time the skylight had been cleaned and it could have accumulated several years of dirt. I also might have used too much water on the pad. I put a light mist on the polishing pad and ran over it again. This pad also came back black, but it appeared to remove the smears from the first run and the window looked pretty good.

Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started My Business

I'm still a newbie, but I've experienced enough already to have a short list of things I wish I knew before I started my window cleaning business (or at least as I was starting it). Add to this list your own items and do a solid for future newbies!

1. My business is window cleaning, not web site design. I spent hours and hours trying to self-teach the basics of setting up a credible web site. Eventually I was able to learn how to make mine do most of what I wanted from it, but it's going to need a significant overhaul and upgrade once I'm doing well enough to afford a professional to do it for me. All that time I spent would have been better used scouring the WCR web site and Forums and learning my craft.

2. Which leads to Number 2- I should have become a paying member of WCRA immediately rather than waiting several months. The depth of resources, training and know how possessed by fellow members is worth every penny and more. For those who try to glom on the site and get everything they can for free, leaving as soon as it's going to cost them something, they miss the powerful principle of giving back that so many WCRA members excel at. I'm convinced that true, lasting success in the business only comes through that.

3. Consult a good CPA before setting up your entity. I was able to set up a NY LLC fairly easily by following the online application process, but missed several key things that a good CPA would have told me about or done for me. For instance, I did not know that NY requires a window cleaner to charge a sales tax on their services. Luckily, I figured that out before I started charging for my services. In the county where I live, I'm required to charge 8.65%. I also didn't realize that I had to apply for an authorization to charges sales tax. I thought it would be enough to just collect it and send it in. Once again, a good CPA would have been telling me this.

4. Using a personal use vehicle for your cleaning business may require you to get a commercial tag for the vehicle. I learned this after I got car magnets advertising my new business to put on the doors of our Honda CRV. I would love to have a commercial vehicle, but limited resources required I go this route initially. What I didn't realize is that the police in my area look for just such advertising on personally tagged vehicles (particularly when you are driving on a Parkway) in order to issue tickets for failing to have commercial plates.

5. Your start up expenses will probably not be as minimal as you expected in the beginning. I thought I would need a squeegee to get started. The more I thought it through, however, the more I started to sound like the character Steve Martin played in the movie The Jerk. I just need this 10" squeegee. And 10" scrubber cover. And T-bar. This 10" squeegee, scrubber cover, T-Bar and bucket. And a bucket on a belt (and a belt, with pouches). I started out by doing my own house and then several homes of friends and family for free in order to get a handle on what I needed and couldn't do without. It turned out that there was a whole lot more than I expected. Poles, scrapers, cleaning solution, towels, ladders, set offs, ladder levelers, hard water stain remover- the list went on and on. The more work I did, the more I realized I needed to be able to do it properly and to be credible. Web site expenses, phone expenses, estimate and invoicing tools- it's really tough to know when to stop and just get out there and start doing work that will pay for it all. While everybody's idea is different of what the basics consist of to get started, I would imagine that everyone who has been in the business awhile and comes up with such a list will include things that most newbies would never think of at first. And no matter how much stuff you invest in, there is still more out there that if you had it, your business would be improved.

6. Getting jobs will be the most important thing you need to get really good at (at least for me), so you need to make sure you spend adequate time on this. I love working on the expertise side of things, or the operations side of making sure the business has everything it needs in order to succeed. The marketing side come a whole lot less easily for me, but that's the heart of growing it. There are tons of options for how to market your business. I have to gravitate to the ones that cost very little initially, but I also have to choose even the cheaper options wisely because I can't afford to not get results. What would be nice, but I haven't found yet, is a proven system, or method, that virtually guarantees results and can easily be followed by newbies who are on a limited marketing budget. I've actually encountered such systems in other businesses I've built, such as in residential real estate, and they are really powerful. Would love to hear if there is anything similar for window cleaning.

7. You can't rely on your customer to have a working hose hooked up, so if there is any chance you are going to need one (cleaning screens, operating your WFP, etc.), you better bring your own.

8. As important as it is to wear shoe covers when you go inside your customer's house, it's just as important to remember to take them off every time you go back outside. I have forgotten to do that several times and it's costing me a new pair of shoe covers every time I do.

9. Having a good quality tool to remove screens with is essential to have with you at all times. I learned this while practicing on my own house before starting for real, and broke or bent several of our cheap screens before realizing there must be a better way to do it.

Now, what's on your list?

Speed and Efficiency

So, I've been working for an older gentleman that is considering selling me his route for a share as he is looking to retire. I've been getting good experience with different sized windows and squeegees, and have been told that my work is very good and that I have a great eye for detail. I've only been doing this for close to a month, so my speed isn't up to par, which is a given. Here's the kicker. I've been slow at everything I do except for skiing (I go straight ;-)). I'd usually be one of the last to finish tests in school... have been told I'm slow on other jobs, and have been let go from an auto detailing job due to my lack of speed. I bust my butt, but still can't seem to keep up with the crew. I'm a perfectionist, and try to get every little speck clean. When my WC mentor tells me I'm slow, I get upset because it makes me feel like I am going to fail. I feel like I will hit a speed plateau, as I'm a bit clumsy. I honestly love fanning windows, but fear that my profits will suffer once I hit my speed and efficiency ceiling. I have no idea how people type so darn quickly on their smartphones. I'm starting to wonder if this is the right industry for me. For now, I figure I will keep practicing to see how much faster I can get without making mistakes. I remember seeing someone's signature saying that "A slow window cleaner is a poor window cleaner". I'm not looking to make millions. Just looking to make a living off of my own business. Some doubts are beginning to creep in.

how long or short to cut a new rubber

Hey guys even after 5 years of window cleaning, goes to show that theres always something new to learn.

I ordered a 50ft long rubber and planned to cut them manually for my 24/30/36 inch channells. My reasoning was to cut them about an inch shorter then the channel which will allow me to stretch it to length so that I will have a nice sturdy rubber.

the first day at a job with my new rubbered 24 inch channell i notice that im leaving a trail of water as I wipe. turns out that stretching the rubber is not a good idea.

Am I correct?

does anyone else stretch their rubber or is it best to make sure there is no tension at all as far as elasticity?

Question Midrise window cleaning

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any tips on how to get insurance for Mid-rise window cleaning.

We are a new company and through extensive searching, have only found one insurance company that would cover us. The insurance we currently have is saying we can't go past 25'. We can't even get coverage to rent a lift. We both work with lifts up to 45' on a daily basis with our full time jobs.

Is there anyone out there that uses WFP only ( or as much as possible including ground floor windows) on residential customers. I love WFP and use it on about 30% of jobs, but I find because I was trained in trad, I feel that it is faster on a lot situations. Question Window alarm contacts

When you run into a well window with an alarm contact do you get permission to remove and reaffirm the contact so you can pull the sliding pane. Most of the time the contacts pop off when you lift the unit to remove it. If you bid it over the phone or from the outside you may not catch the fact the contacts are there. Perhaps the customer is not home, just remove and replace?

Contact form / estimate request form

Hey,

Just want to hear your opinions on what works best for you. Short and simple contact form or detailed form asking for window pane count, sq footage, screen count ect or responsibid?

I started to use responsibid a few months ago but have noticed a lot less people have been filling out the responsibid as compared to when I used to have a fairly simple but still detailed estimate request form. I have a few theories as to why this is: They feel their information is not safe as they notice it is an outsourced software and don't want someone else to have their information (which is not the case of course). They want a more personal experience and want to deal with a real person emailing them back rather than deal with a software and feel they are just another number. A lot of my potential clients are 50+ and are possibly intimidated by dealing with automated online systems (even though it is extremely simple).

Has anyone else used responsibid and switched back to what they were using before? When I first got responsibid I was thrilled, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread but I am questioning if it is right for my business.

Although all that being said, I have booked some very large, high priced jobs with responsibid with extreme ease. The only issue is that the # of people filling it out has dropped when compared to previously.

Why are window cleaners so reticent about their income?

As some of you know, I've been apprenticing with a long-time window cleaner for the last few weeks. We do an average of 30-40 storefronts a day M-F. I asked him what his average annual income is, and he said he had no idea. So I asked him what he bids his weekly and monthly contracts for, and he said it varies, but won't do a job for less than $50 for a weekly per month. If I take his route, and he takes 30%, I have no idea how much I'll be making.

Any idea how much this guy makes based on the info I've provided?

Based on some salary website, it seems window cleaners make on average $25-30k a year. My mentor seems a bit above average.

So I'm new to WCR and the business side of window cleaning. I've got to say though that I've been spending way to much time reading everything on here and I want to start out by thanking everyone for the wealth of knowledge they have contributed to this forum. From what I've been reading I'm very comfortable with how I'm starting my business and yesterday while calling insurance companies I felt like I had an idea of what I was actually asking for. I'm still full of questions though and I'm sure as the weeks go by I'll be looking on here for answers, but right now I'm working on my logo and I'm having a heck of a time finding just a simple outline of a squeegee and was wondering if anyone might have one they are willing to share?
