What is your New Year's Resolution?

I have finally decided to give up soft drinks for good. I only drink one or two a week, but I know I will be healthier without them. When I told my wife I was giving up soft drinks, she said..."You are giving them up again." In the past I would stop drinking Coke for a month or so and then start up again. I remember as kid I had a bet with my father. He said he would buy me the weight bench I wanted if I gave up soft drinks for a year. I did it! I remember drinking a Coke after that bet.....it burned my throat so much! It was like fire in my throat.

Anyways...enough about my addiction. :D What are you guys giving up for your New Year's resolution?

What do you think is stunting your growth?

For me it's been receivables - commercial work pays net 15-30 sometimes 45 days so I bank on the resi as a cash flow but when i have do start chasing my bills i can go a week or two at a time only pulling in enough to pay the help and by the time i get my checks they're already spent.

I know some of you take up front deposits but a lot of my customers get weirded out when i ask for a credit card. I've even caused some tension from long time customers by asking for payment a few days later (how dare me). This has definitely caused me to struggle in growing my business. I've gotten tougher these past few months being firm about money. I Should be writing this post from a tropical island with this past years numbers. But I'm here in cold nyc.

I've hired a girl part time to handle the recievables as part of a solution to the problem cause I can't deal with the stress of chasing bills and it also keeps my relationship with the customer strong and professional. Also when I was the "new company" in town I was afraid to be so direct about money cause I didn't want to lose the customer, I realize that this was a huge mistake and hurt me bad.

I'd like to hear if any of you have more advice on this issue.

I'd also like the hear what kind of issues have stunted your company's growth and what have you done to fix the issue.

UV Index Affects Sealants

OK. UV map.gifCheck this out. You will see how the UV Index for the Northeast is really bad compared to Southern California. Not what one would expect. UVC can destroy the longevity of a glass treatment/sealant/coating. So. If you are looking to treat a building with a product you should consider where that building is located, including how resistant the product is to UVC attack.

Enduroshield is marketed in the US by a company located in Southern California. Specifically Santa Barbara.

Question Prospecting Storefront Managers

Just curious about how to go about getting names of owners and managers for storefront cleanings. I hate calling and asking for the manager and for the ones I stop into I would really like to know a name to ask for when I pop by. I've tried calling some places, asking for the manage and writing their name down when they answer and then just give them a compliment about some random service I got there without telling them really who I am. Then I have a name when I pop in a few hours later to inquire about their need for a window cleaner. But that is kind of a pain in the ass. How do you get the names of people you are courting for service? Or do you not even worry about it at all and just stop in, ask for the manager, and ask if they are in the market for a window cleaner with your pitch? I'm just looking for a better way!

Thanks

Josh

BNI Networking or pound the pavement?

A friend has been asking me to join his BNI chapter. There is 36 people in the group and all seem very positive and upbeat .The pest control guy claims 20% of his work from the group. Others state similar stats. My friend is a plumber and claims 6-8 K he first year .So the question is drop $560 for the first year and $12 weekly and commit to 1.5 hours a week for meetings and an extra 1.5 hours a week for other events they say you must participate in or take this money and advertise and use the 3 hours a week to solicit? Any ideas or true life experience?

New Logo, business cards, and flyers! Thoughts?

Okay Everyone, so I've recently changed my name from "clear view window cleaning" to "Walsh's Cleaning Service". It's a small town here (plenty of glass) and I'm a one-man show. So I wanted it to include my name. So I got together new marketing materials. Keep in mind I already have the stuff so I can't change that. But feedback is welcome for future changes.

First: the Logo. My Fiancé drew up a simple design and I Loved it. ImageUploadedByWindow Cleaning Resource1419916530.141218.jpg

Second my Business Cards:

That ONE Album that blew your mind.

I was listening to a classic rock aka "oldies" station and a song came on that reminded me of when my mind was blown.

For me it was Iron Maiden's "Somewhere in Time" album. The song I heard on the radio was "Wasted Years".

First off, who knew that Iron Maiden would get air play.

Second off, it bugs me that it's now considered "classic rock" when it was so niche back in the day. I was never one of the cool kids with the jean jacket and "metal" patches sewn on and I never sported a tour t-shirt, but Iron Maiden was definitely something that wasn't "mainstream" rock.

The Somewhere in Time album: I bought it because Eddie looked evil. I opened it up and the cassette smelled awesome. It was the sweetest smelling cassette I'd ever opened. Then I plugged it into my walkman and from the first guitar strains I was hooked. My mind was literally blown.

There's been a lot of albums that I've memorized (Queensryche Operation Mindcrime and RunDMC's Raising Hell come to mind), a lot of albums that got nonstop play (Metallica's Master of Puppets and Def Leppards Hysteria), and a lot of albums that crop up at unexpected times (when I see a politician on tv, Ice-T's "Shut Up, Be Happy" starts to play). But Somewhere in Time is just one of those that stands stark in my memory.

So I was curious what album just blew your mind. The one album that you'd love to be able to hear again for the first time.

Wanting to know how to tell the types of glass

I am unsure what types of glass I will be cleaning and want to know how to tell the difference before I clean them.

I see windows that look tinted and there is a lot of crap I need to scrape off. Then find out later that it's either made in the window or not tinted at all. Also other glass like low e glass and others that I need to know before cleaning. It's one of my troubled spots I need to be on top of.

Saying NO!!!!! Increases my bottom line

This came about from answering another question about add on services. Saying no to to smaller things leaves more time to make real money. I have people ask me for little things ( in their minds) but are ginormouse time wasters. Can u replace the plastic roller wheel in my sliding screen door? They have no idea what it takes to track down the right wheel. They think Home Depot has everything and your time and gas to Home Depot is free. But in most cases hardware stores don't have the exact right wheel. In my estimation 3 to 4 hours of actual time to change 1 wheel on sliding screen door. That's finding the wheel, be it hardware store, Internet or specialty store, going back out and taking the door down, removing old wheel and replacing new wheel and installing door. And that's the best case senerio. Usually wheel doesn't come out easy and you have to take apart the screen door to get to the corner wheel bracket and then rescreen the whole screen. So 3 to 4 hour of time along with a rescreen is $365 to $465 of MY TIME. I can make a brand new awesome marquie door for $295 kit cost $98 20 minutes to cut and screen and drive out to install all told maybe an hour total of my time and $200 in profit. What small time wasters do people ask u to do that are a complete waste of time and make you no money.

Advice, Multiple Services....

The issue that Im having is Im like most of you guys offering multiple services, but i feel that when i do this one of my services stand out and the others fall to the side and dont get the attention that they deserve. Anyone else noticing this trend lately?

This year was the worst one since in business (nine years..) with losing bids.

In particular with prevailing wage projects.

In this area, it's always been the case; you know...how these janitorial outfits will bid on these projects and not know how to bid the ccu for the window cleaning/building washing aspect so the lowball it to get the contract and whine to you how they are under budget and get you to lower your numbers?,

What I've been seeing is two scenarios;

They have someone they hired and end up needing to hire someone else or;

call me for a bid, have me spend all freaken week on it because it needed to be turned in yesterday when it's all a lie (theres no deadline folks, they absolutely DO make it up to get you to drop what your're doing. Really.)

and during this whole process blow smoke in my ear and tell me I got the gig, while my other line beeps and its a friend of mine telling me he was asked for numbers as well!

This happened on 3 occasions this year!

They always picked the lowest numbers DESPITE QUALIFICATIONS or recommendations from the Prime Contractor on site.

Now, thats not the thing that gets me ticked...

If its prevailing wage, the only area where the numbers would fluctuate is in the profit margin because everyone has the same overhead give or take a few bucks. Everyone is bidding for profit margins only.

How can other professionals be HALF MY PRICE?

You're supposed to turn in your certified payroll sheets etc...before you even see a check! I ain't no whistle blower, but this ain't cool.

Look, I know you gotta cut corners in order to make a buck these days. I simply can't.

Unfortunately, I have to pay the price for that too.

Anyone else in that boat?

Question glass railing cleaning

This year I had a spike in the number of glass patio railings. These pieces of glass have to be the toughest to clean, mostly, I suppose, do to the fact that they are so exposed to the weather. I spend a lot of time cleaning these things but I am never quite satisfied with the job I have done on them. I've tried a number of different things to come up with a effective yet efficient way to clean them, but I still not happy. Does anyone have any thoughts or tips on this subject.

Marketing Telemarketing/Phone Systems

Do you do telemarketing?

Is it focused on Residential, or commercial?

What is the script that you use commercial and residential... (you can pm me if you don't want to share here). :) I know if you shared your script with me it would be mutually beneficial to us because I could play the part of an ignorant prospect, and in turn helping you hone in your script using skill. ;)

After looking over past threads on this topic it seems InfoUSA | Mailing Lists | Email Marketing Lists | Business | Sales Leads | Consumer is where I should go to learn a bit more about the the topic. I was just wondering what you guys had to say about your own success or failure with telemarketing. I know someone will be tempted to say, "well success with telemarketing really depends on the saturation of the market in your area, your demographics, psychographics, time of year your cold calling, and the type of tooth paste your prospects brush their teeth with..."

Also do you any of you have a land line you use as your business and have it forwarded to your cell phone? If I hired a appointment setting service How would I do it so that whoever they called it would be coming from my number? And what kind of recording services are out there so you can monitor the calls made from the service hired?

Thanks again!

Why do company's that give the worst service

-late call back for estimates

- delayed scheduling

-not showing up on time or not calling

- ok service

-not finishing the job on time when promised.

-deck jobs taking three weeks

etc you get what I'm saying. Even with a powerful marketing plan why do you think they do well.

Facebook boost

Lets say that you are going to boost a fb post. You have a good idea of the gender and age range that land on your web page. Most are people aged 35-54 and about 58% of those are female. Would you target them for your boost or would you try to hit a different target, lets say females aged 55-64. Demographics say that I get about 20% less from that age group. What would you do?

Also there is debate on the best days to send eddm. Is there a best day and time to boost a post?

First Injury Survey Results :

Here are a few of the general results :

This survey is for Window Cleaners working with an injury, and using Water Fed Poles.

We can't prove an injury comes directly from water fed pole use, but we can prove if we can heal or prevent them by dealing with guys who have injuries.

Your injuries may be caused by sport, or by being a traditional window cleaner - but if you are suffering pain, numbness or weakness AND you use water fed poles, please contribute your experiences.

You can remain anonymous.

I am going to select and fund 25 people to test our new appliances developed with Dr. Douglas Mills M.D.

Question How did you build your website?

I am going to build my own website, Well kind of, maybe, not really. I'm going to be hiring someone to build it for me. But I need to have a grasp on what I'm wanting them to build me first. The only problem is that I don't know hardly anything...

What CMS Platform do you use?

what kind of plugin's do you have on your site i.e. online payment, youtube intergretion, contact box, or a spot they can leave a review?

How do I allow someone access to change things on the website without giving them total access. How do I remain in control of my domain while they do their thing? I've been told there is something with Godaddy hosting that you can do something like this but I don't even know the terms to research.

Where do I go to educate myself on building a website?

I would like to say any/all advice is welcome... But I'm looking to here from those who have already built there own site.

And Merry Christmas!

Back in the day

The "What's for dinner" thread got me thinking about the old days. Here's where you can post your memories of "back in the day."

Back in the day, the phone was attached to the wall. If you were "privileged" you had a long cord between the base and handset. Quick hacker note: you could get free long distance by whistling a specific tone into the phone. The Captain Crunch whistles were perfect for this.

Here's what an old school selfie looked like (if you had a Polaroid camera):

1970s Facebook Picture.jpg

Here's what your music looked like:

ipod-i-am-your-father.jpg

And heaven help you if your favorite song was in the middle of "Side B"...

Oh, and if you had a favorite song, you had to call in and request it on the radio and then sit by with a finger on the "record" button but that jerk wad dj would always talk over the beginning of the song. If you had a good mix tape (like a playlist, but was a LOT harder to add/remove/rearrange songs) you'd have to be sure to pop the tab to prevent someone from recording over it.
