help needed on commercial bid.

So I know this probably sounds just like a million and a half other posts on here. But I'm new to the business side of things and I've never bid a job this big before (Or I'm making it up to be more than it really is lol). Anyways 320 windows divided equally among a 3 story building on a university campus. From the google street view, none of the windows appear to be to big or anything special. I'm thinking in the $3 per window one the first level and $5 per window for everything above. Now my real questions is on something like that are most of you still laddering up to all the windows or are you renting a lift for a day? I'm going to hopefully meet with the guy tomorrow and take a look at the place and I'll take some photos for you all then. Any help, tips and pointers are appreciated as I'm new to this.

Another name thread because I'm a dummy...

Well, I got to thinking of the "perfect" business name, and thought up of one, and then went and ordered some free business cards from VistaPrint. I got all excited and didn't bother to Google my idea, and after I get these cards I discover that there's already a business using that exact name, only in another state some 2000 miles away. I check out their website, and find out they're a WCRA member, hahaha.

Should I think up of another name, or contact this business and see if it's okay for me to use it? Luckily I've not yet formed an LLC or anything, but I just wish I had thought it out some more because now I have 250 business cards that are probably worthless, hahaha.

The Internet's Boy: Aaron Swartz

just wanted to share a video I just watched about Aaron Swartz, the little boy genius whos life goal was to make the world a better place through free access to public domain data that the government and corporations try to profit off of.

very moving story and the reason why we as human beings need an open and free internet to share our ideas and knowledge to improve and advance our world.

Specifically for us window cleaners the internet helps us freely share...

-safety information

-business/sales methods

-skillsets

-tools

the movie is 1hr 45mins long but totally worth it, the last two minutes are the most inspiring.

Nightmare storms

So I did this house last week. 93 windows in the richy rich side of town. Home is owned by a prestigious builder in the same area. Half the windows are fairly new Anderson double hungs. Half I swear are original storms from the 20's when this house was constructed. We clean the home with the exception of the insides of the old storms because they wouldn't itch out like some I've seen. The wife was ok so we did everything accessible and she said it was good and called it a day. One week passes and still no check (I usually receive payment when complete, but she asked if she could have hubby pay out of biz account). Yesterday we get a call from hubby saying we didn't clean all the windows and he wouldn't pay til we did them. I asked when we could come over and he said the fam is on vacation. He said we could access the in betweens from outside so I just said ok and figured I'd find out when I got there. On the job as I'm typing this and my ladder guy literally has to unscrew the entire window frame from the house, unseat it from the bottom, balance it down the ladder clean everything and put it back in place fearing the entire time we don't break anything. Anyone else do a job like this or have suggestions for the future? With a job like this, I'm almost at the point of requiring the home owner to have the storms out before we arrive to job and put back in place when we're done. Seems more like a construction job than window cleaning to me.

Hello all! First time poster, longtime window cleaner!

As mentioned above, I have been doing windows for awhile (16 Years). I am a full time Paramedic/Firefighter in Albuquerque, and I wish I could say part-time window cleaner, but I think we all know that there is nothing part-time about running your own business. I found this forum because I recently ordered my first waterfed Pole system (Wash it Pro/Reach it Mini) and am really excited about getting it and trying it out. Still a little nervous about it after all these years of nose to the glass window work! But my wife will be happy because our home windows will finally be cleaned for the summer.....at least the outside,LoL!

I have been looking over this group for the past couple of days learnt tips from wfp's, to marketing and sales, and it has really rejuvenated my enthusiasm for the business again. Looking forward to exchanging ideas with you all in the Future!

J.P.

DI tank 20x2.5 vs 20x4.5

I need to add a new DI tank to one of my vehicles and it needs to be smaller than a 1/2 cubic foot for space reasons. This will be used after an RO membrane. I know some will recommend I just buy something ready to go but first I want to compare two sizes of DIY tanks...a 20x2.5 inch and a 20x4.5 inch (big blue), both with refillable cartridge inserts. I know the obvious advantages and disadvantages (mainly initial cost, size, weight, and frequency of changing resin differ between the two). I have two specific questions...

1. Is there going to be a flow rate difference?

2. Does anyone know the exact amount of resin that fits in each respective tank? I've seen a range of 24 to 32 oz for the smaller tank and 6.5 to 7 lbs for the larger, but would like verification.

Convention Room Discount at the Gaylord Opryland Almost Over

There are rooms available for the Window Cleaning Convention but they are in short supply. We ran out and I was able to extend the block but I can’t get any more. Also, the room block runs out this week. That means that even if there is a room available it won’t be in our block and will be $250-$300.

If you’re coming get your room today.

Your Worst Screen Nightmare-Millard Screens too tight!!

We did a job yesterday on a nice home only 2 years old. We thought it would be an easy job. The screens were impossible. When you compressed the springs from the exterior you could see that the screen was literally larger than the opening. I have seen this with Milgard Windows before, but not the whole house. I was able to remove 8 of them, barely was able to put 6 of them back on and 2 would only break/bend if I continued to try and put them in correctly. We had 6 where we had to flip the 150 lb sliders to clean and 4 single hung windows that I had to pull the spline out on 3 sides of the screen, clean the window and then re-spline in the screen mesh.

Window washing framework for back of truck

P1010100.jpg

I built this rig to keep equipment from sliding around in box of truck. The long piece is a 2x6 with a notch for a wooden pole and a broom holder attached to hold short pole. The 2x4 going from the 2x6 toward tailgate keeps my bucket from moving too much. Anyone else use a similar arrangement?

Well water stains on glass

Tried f9 and some came out and some didn't so it ended up looking like drip marks. I was scared to go back over it again being that some parts of the glass were cleaner than others I didn't want to eff it up. Should I hit it up with one restore or is there a simpler solution to this.

image.jpg

Both sides of the glass are affected. 26 panes.

Market Research

Hey guys,

Is there a website or something where I could do market research on a national level? Such as

-how many window cleaning companies there are in the nation, broken down into, commercial, residential, and storefront?

-How much is spent on window cleaning per year nationally?

- How many people actually get their windows washed?

I saw on awcmag.com is said there were about 8,000 window cleaners nationally, but I feel like there should be more than that? maybe i'm wrong though. As always, your guys' help is definitely appreciated!

Who makes the standard?

Hey guys, just wondering, is there any kind of association or group that recommends that a homeowner get their windows cleaned 2-4 times a year? Or is this just an accepted norm, just wondering for credibility purposes, had a customer ask me about this and I honestly didn't know? I just told them it is kind of the accepted norm from everything that I've read.
