Need Some Sales Advice

I just gained a few small storefront accounts and while I was going door to door I stopped at a pretty large factory/office building. The first person I talked to seemed pretty important (didn't get a job title from him, but he seemed to be a manager of some type) and he was extremely polite and receptive. He called the maint. dept. guy and introduced us. The maint guy said they need window cleaning, but that he would email me when they're ready.

My question: should I wait for that email, or follow up? I'm thinking follow up, but I don't want to pester them out of doing business with me. Any suggestions on whether or not to follow up and, if so, how to go about it?

This could be a great contract for me, so I don't want to screw it up!

Thanks!

WFP Technique for Odd Shaped Windows

I'm pretty new and still trying to get my foot in the door at a very high-end development where my wife cleans. Almost all if the windows in these houses are true French pane, with apt of them being an odd "half diamond" shape. ImageUploadedByWindow Cleaning Resource1406842023.744468.jpg

Question is: with WFP would you clean them in rows, like any other French pane, or is there a better way to do it?

Also, (I think I know the answer to this) do I need to worry about the water staining or discoloring the cedar siding on these houses?

I plan to use my Unger Interior Pure Water System on the insides of these, too. Has anyone done used it for odd shaped windows yet? If so, lessons learned?

I discovered something new the other day. I was able to remove tape goo and painted sign from tinted glass by wetting the window and then scrubbing with a non-scratch scrubber. No scratches and a pleased customer!

For sale is my 1 1/2 year old complete roof cleaning system. It is a 5800 1/2" poly with the "pump in a box" upgrade. I paid $451 for it brand new, not including tax and shipping. The battery that is in it still works great but only comes with it if it is local pick up. Let me know if you're interested. The system is in great working order! micah@happyglassww.com

WFP work near power lines

Hi all,

I've been asked to provide a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS in Australia) for cleaning a small building front close to electrical power lines overhead.

Would anybody have a template I could use as a starting point? Not sure what the equivalent of a SWMS is overseas, but some other names are JSA (job safety analysis).

It basically a legal statement outlining all risks on the job and how these will be managed on site.

Thanks in advance,

The Power of EBC

OK. Call me dumb like my phone. And I am a soap head. The other day I was playing with cleaners again cuz I ran out of Dawn. I grabbed some EBC and changed my water. Not being content with the glide and sudz I was getting I put about a pint of EBC in three gallons of water. After about one hour of work cleaning clean windows my water was totally black. It was breaking down the black rubber seal of the window frames. And probably doing the same to my squeegee rubber. When I got home I noticed my fingers hurt. Bad. I had caused chemical burns on my skin. Before I wrote this I looked at the MSDS. It is way on the alkaline side. Unlike the mild soaps which are neutral. And there is an ingredient that is not named or even identified by a CAS#. My take on this? It is a great product. Cuts through grime very good. Has a pleasant smell as well. Just use it at the correct concentration. But if you have sensitive skin wear gloves.

First 45. Need help.

photo 1.jpgphoto(21).jpgphoto 2.jpg

Ok, so I took the plunge and cut my first 45 with dog ears. But, I am not sure if I like it. It certainly makes for less detailing, but when I make turns with it and cut into the corners, the edge of the rubber moves away from the channel. Did I cut the rubber wrong? In the pic, I am putting pressure on the blade to make it do what I am talking about.

Hair Spray and Unger Pads?

I'm bidding on a hair salon and am wondering if the Unger pure water indoor pads will work.

I love these pads (usually dry) for regular cleans, but I'm assuming they won't work so well if the windows have any kind of hair spray used near them.

Thoughts?

Most efficient way to navigate track homes.

So it seems I've been doing a lot of track homes lately.

I've been doing all of the ladder-jump work in the morning on the exterior while it's cool, then hit the lowers, and do the interior top to bottom as the afternoon thundershowers hit.

What's your preferred method? Each climate/situation presents different ways of doing things, but what's your standard preference?

Thanks!

Old Aluminum Storm Windows

On some smaller double hung windowsI ran into some old 3 piece storm windows. The screen & bottom glass slide up & down in their track. It just seems there's no way to take them out from the inside. I looked & looked. Has anyone else had to deal with these? Is there a way to take out the glass pieces & screen so I can get at the house windows? I's stumped. Many thanks for any ideas you could lend.

COMMERCIAL GUYS : Just think what the first window each day could do for you !

61656_10153040159054278_7835873219942105638_n.jpg

People with MONEY do not loan money to people with NO MONEY.

People with MONEY want to loan money to people who can leverage their money to MAKE MONEY and pay back the loaned money.

Commercial Window Cleaners often have the most stable cash-flow as a result of window cleaning service contracts.

The first window you clean each day could pay for a 5 storey Professional Water Fed Pole system with a RO-DI Pure Water system for Hard Water areas.

Calling NYC Betas

Anyone who works in NYC knows how bad the windows are there. Is there anyone on this forum who works in NYC? Check out the Grande Hyatt. That glass is supposed to be a bright silver cuz it is first surface pyrolytic. After only a single month return you can't clean a window and have it look perfect again. I am looking for companies in NYC to beta test my Scrub and other abrasive products.

Some thoughts about lead exposure

The other day, I was cleaning 100 year old windows in a 100 year old home, as I normally do. As always, there was 100 year old glazing on the french panes, and a lot of them were peeling and falling apart.

When I bought up the fact that the glazing was falling apart to the homeowner, her first question was "Do I have to worry about lead poisoning?"

I told her I could not honestly answer that question. There was at least a half dozen layers of paint visible on the peeling glazing, and it was, in fact falling apart.

This got me thinking...

For guys like myself who work in a very old area, we see this every day. We are constantly pulling old paint chips out of sills, scraping ancient paint off of windows, and going about it willy nilly without a care in the world.

I'm not even touching the subject of leaded glass either.

So, I did a little research on the subject, and do think that I will make an appointment with the good Doc to get tested for lead exposure. It is only as a precaution though.

But, hypothetically, if there was an abnormal amount of lead in my system, would it change the way I do business? Would it change what types of windows I was willing to tackle? Would it change your modus operandi?

Just a rant here. I never thought of this in the past.

crm software 2014

i see lots of threads about crm software but then see i am reading 2 3 or even 4 year old info.

i am seeking current info. i have looked a bit at customer factor, jobber, aworka/george

i am currently working as a one crew op doing only window cleaning but hope to expand.

i think wcra should have an unbiased review of the various crms more commonly used by window cleaners and would appreciate input especially from those who tried more than one.

for example at the moment between tcf and jobber it appears they are quite similar but jobber appears more advanced in that it already has mobile app..

do you feel the need to still use quick books or is your crm suffienct for accounting?

Always loved that Axel Foley line from Beverly hills cop

Anyway I am on vacation.

It's nice to take time off during the "busy" season and not have it bother you.

And I needed the break!

So here I am in Boston.?what a gorgeous city!,

As I was taking a duck tour, walking the redline ( freedom trail) and city trolley I knoticed how filthy the windows wear.

So is there anyone cleaning these windows in the city?

I guess I ask cuz as busy as the street traffic is just wondered how they did it.

Here I am on vaca on a city tour trolley tour bus thinking about how dirty the windows are.

Man, I need another beer.......

Need Ideas for Bonus for my Operations Manager

3 months ago I hired an Operations Manager. His job is to make sure all the jobs are completed and my clients are happy. He is currently overseeing two other full-time window/gutter cleaners. We have 2 trucks at this point.

I would like to grow as a business, but would like to link the financial prosperity of my Ops Manager to the financial prosperity of my business. So, I have been doing some brainstorming, and would like to bounce an idea off of you. I'm very open to ideas. This may be a bad one. I don't know.

Basically, I would give him his established salary of $3,600 per month, PLUS a bonus that would be determined by how well the business did that month. I'm thinking for $0 - $250,000 gross sales, he would get 1%. $250,000 - 500,000 he would get 2% as a bonus. Anything above $500,000 he would get 3%.

This would only be on the crews that he supervised.

If we grew to the point where I needed more than one Ops Manager, then he would get the bonus only on the gross sales that the crews he oversaw produced.

I would give the bonus on a monthly basis. So, if we did $25,000 in a month, he would get a $250 bonus for that month. However, after we hit $250k for the year, and we did a $25,000 month, he would get a $500 bonus for that month.

What do you think of this idea? Has anyone tried something similar. I would like to give him incentive to work hard to get the business to grow and make sure that we keep the quality of our work at a very high standard, and make it so that he is rewarded in the process.

It would be my responsibility as the Owner, to do the marketing necessary to grow the business. I'm considering doing some heavy direct mail marking to see that happen.

Anyway, would love to get your feedback.
