Question What is the most time consuming aspect of residential window cleaning?

Hey everyone. Just a general question on what the title says.

I personally think it's screen cleaning, or deluxe track cleaning i.e. dry/wet vacuuming.
I've currently added steel wool to my exterior window cleaning procedure and noticed that it has actually cut down on y time due to less detailing afterwards.

Cheers,

Zach

Vinyl doors for commercial space

I own a 3 storied office space and wanted to renovate the space for new marketing company. I wanted to know what kind of windows and doors to choose from for a new office like this. Some say windows should push away heat and light, some say it should keep the place warm and choosing double panes over single panes. I was really confused until I came across a window replacement service in Toronto (Clera windows) that provide good ideas about choosing the right windows.

Transit Van Setup

Can anyone share their pics of their transit van setup, if you have one? I am picking one up in October and will be getting it fully setup and ready to go for March. I have already purchased an Ettore Aquaclean system for it that will be mounted with a pump to run two poles. What i am really interested in is shelving layout. I really want to use this van as a template for all of the vehicles i purchase in the future and to make sure my 2nd location gets started out with a fully setup transit van once I've got the first one dialed in at HQ. My idea is that the van should basically be a rolling shop with enough storage to carry any and all wfp replacement parts needed and a small amount of all supplies that are used on a daily basis, strip washers, rubber, booties, etc.

Thanks guys.

Bathroom breaks

Anyone ever go poop in a customers home then have the embarrassing task of asking them if they have a plunger, the homeowner saying no,,then going to the local store to buy one, and ultimately give them a $20 or so inconvenience discount? I mean, uhmmmm, it hasn't happened to me, just curious what might happen if you **cough** were in this scenario?

My Tips for Newbies (Residential)

Okay, so after my extensive experience gathered through a whole month out on my own, I have a few tips for the new guys.

1.) Kijiji/Craigslist type of sites - Any advertising website which you can put ads up for free is a great way to find some initial residential clients. I put up 2-4 ads (same ad, copy & pasted) on Kijiji a day and have gotten 4 clients in about 2 weeks. The only downside to this is that usually the people here are bargain shoppers, so you might get haggled down a bit if you want to land the job.

So far from this route I've made $390.00 in about 12 hours. That's only $32.50 per hour but it beats sitting at home on my ass making nothing!

2.) Flyers, flyers, flyers! Okay, so I've been lazy and handed out only 8 flyers and got 0 calls lol. But I've read enough on this forum and over the net that this is the way to go.

3.) Bend but don't break - I've lost a few estimates because I was unwilling to budge from my price. I wanted to make $70/hour from the get go. Be willing to lower your bid a little if the customer tries to haggle it down, but don't bend over backwards. Look up threads here on landing 80% of your bids.

4.) Invest in a good ladder - I dished out a bunch of cash on all my tools but decided to skimp on the most important one... and by skimp I mean just use an old shaky ladder the previous homeowner left in my yard. Picked up a nice ****** 24 foot aluminum extension ladder and showing 2nd story gutters and windows who the boss.

5.) Don't wear fancy dress shirts to clean anything - Yeah, you want to look good, but you end up with black oil stains that won't come out!

6.) Slow ride, take it easy - Go at a pace you're comfortable with. Don't try to rush jobs because you will most likely end up doing a shitty job and get no repeat business. Oh, and you can injure yourself too.

7.) Read these forums until your eyes hurt and you develop migraines - use the search function to answer any questions you have and don't be afraid to ask for help!

Sorry if all this info has been posted a bunch of times before or not helpful in any way lol... this is just me learning from my mistakes after my first month as a semi-professional window & gutter cleaner. ;)

Hey-yo! Eastern North Carolina here!

I'm finally taking the plunge into business ownership and I'm proud that its window cleaning!
Super excited to be a part of this community - I've found an enormous wealth of information here, as I think every one has. I can't wait to provide some insight of my own and give back. I'm sure my experiences can be shared - I seem to learn things by messing up first and laughing at it later with others, so I look forward to some great discussion!

First gig

This shop belongs to a friend of mine. There's about ten windows with vinyl lettering and one window has old cracking lettering on it. I learned this am that vinyl lettering is a lil tricky, she wants an inside/ outside quote, how much for scraping lettering off? I'm not sure how much to ask for, thanks guys about 9 tall windows, I'm having trouble uploading pics :(

The Technology of Surface Repair using Superabrasives

This is an article I did in my blog. To read just go to GLASS SMART PRODUCTS & CONSULTING It is the third post down from the top.

I am beginning to develop the slow release pads in my basement laboratory. The most inexpensive disposable pads are based on a very special synthetic silica or SiO2. NOT a crude naturally occurring silica loaded with various silicate contaminants. The particles have also been 'functionalyzed' for easy dispersion in water. Nothing like this exists on the market right now. It is a trade secret.

Suspicious Texts

Has anyone experienced this: you receive a text from an individual claiming to have purchased a house in a city you service stating that they are in need of your service (usually a specific service - window cleaning, gutter cleaning, etc.) and they ask for an estimate, then after giving estimate they ask if you take credit cards. The one I dealt with last week, I told them I can do paypal, but they said they could not use method. Today I just received my third text like this, not from the same number, and it sure appears to be a fraud.

Thanks to all and hello from Wichita, KS.

Set up a user account here a few days ago. I have spent literally several hours reading over various topics in the forum. I haven't kept a list of all the users individually to thank, but wanted to throw a general thank you out there to everyone. I found in particular the workbelt setup, van setup, vehicle wraps, pricing, wfp, and newbie threads extremely helpful. I have certainly benefited and am sure to continue benefiting from the wealth of information/tribal knowledge/collaboration exhibited through this forum. Hopefully I can contribute.

My wife's grandpa started a window washing business decades ago and was all commercial routes done the traditional way (no wfp). Fortunately I have gotten some of the basics down from his wife who has taken over the business for him. Also, I went to school for accounting and finance so I have the business admin side covered fairly well. I started a small route when I was in college with just a pole, squeegee, bucket, scrub mop, and scraper, but had to give it away. I have a couple of guys lined up to work for me that are the good hard worker type and very trustworthy (the kind every employer is always trying to find). Over the next few weeks I will be getting all the business red tape taken care of and acquiring all the equipment I need to make a modest start. I will be focusing all my sales efforts on commercial and then use a foothold there to move into the residential market.

My start up list:

Phone just for business
Business cards
Accounting software
Shirts with company info on it
Professional looking bid/estimate sheets
Insurance
LLC and EIN registering
Bank account

Van
squeegees (need recommendations seems like there is a lot of variations and custom combo's out there of rubber and handles, ettore wagtail or ?)
T-bars and brush/mops (I liked the kind I had before that had scrub pads on each end)
scrapers
belts
boabs (i used a bucket before, not sure how these work without spilling water everywhere especially if you are getting in and out of a vehicle all the time?)
magic erasers
poles
towels
microfibers and/or scrims (input on this?? never used a scrim) and what microfibers are best cause i had one windex one that
seemed to work great and some others from walmart that might as well have been washcloths, difference?
glass gleam 4 (side note - what's best to add to water in freezing weather . . . rubbing alcohol? windshield washer fluid? anti-freeze? or?)

Also, I realize this is a ways down the road, but what are the thoughts on branching out into other things like:
tinting
resealing/removing condesation-fog
pressure washing (buildings, parking lots, driveways - possibly heated)
gutter cleaning
seamless gutter installation
cement coloring/staining
window installation and screen repair
pest control
lawncare

Do? Don't do? If so what would be the best order of addtion be? How to learn enough/practice enough to be skilled to provide the service?

Happy window cleaning guys! Look forward to hearing from you.

Ford Transit Connect --> Towing a WFP System

I recently ordered a Ford Transit Connect for my window company and had a tow package added. It has a towing capacity of 2000 lbs and I'm kicking around the idea of building a small trailer to house a WFP system. Has anybody done a small DIY trailer and have some tips they're willing to share?

Thank you in advance for any and all advice!
